Chup (2022) Review – An important film

1

Chup is a revenge thriller film directed by R Balki(Cheeni kum, Paa, Shamitabh). Sunny Deol, Dulquer Salman, and Shreya Dhanwanthary play the leading parts.

In an intriguing plot, a serial killer is on a mission to eliminate disparaging film critics. He executes cinema critics based on what they say in their reviews.

It’s wonderful how often the films make reference to the legendary Guru Dutt. Dulquer does a fantastic job portraying the serial killer Danny. What surprises you is that he never appears to be inhuman despite playing it cruelly. Sunny Deol and Shreya Dhanwanthary are a joy to watch on screen. Vishal Sinha‘s cinematography is spot on, creating a world of thrill and romance together.

The movie grabs your attention immediately away. But the suspense begins to wear off as the movie goes on. It also includes a romantic track between Nila (Shreya) and Danny (Dulquer). The romance is lovely with excellent music from Guru Dutt‘s movies. Despite all of this, the movie ends suddenly. It appears that Balki hurried the movie’s completion.

Chup is an important film. It initiates a discussion. It demonstrates the value of an open interaction between critics and filmmakers. ZINDA REHNE KE LIYE CINEMA CHAHIYE.

Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu: Part I: The Kindling (2022) Review- GVM deserves praise for not taking the easiest path

0

Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu is a 2022 Tamil language film written by B. Jeyamohan and directed by Gautam Vasudev Menon. A.R. Rehman composes the song, while STR performs the lead character.

It is more of a character study. The plot centres around Muthu’s ascent from a hamlet to a mob lord in Mumbai. The film is handled quite differently from other gangster movies. The approach of Gautam Vasudev Menon is really raw and humanist. This allows the movie to breathe more freely. The character and his motivation are introduced gradually in the movie. As a result, patience is needed. This unhurried approach is rather unusual in an era of quick filmmaking.

A R Rehman delivers one of his best albums in a long time. The journey song Marakuma Nenjam represents the film’s spirit. The Mallipo song adds another aspect to the lives of gangsters, making them more human. GVM beautifully and sparingly edited the tracks. Before the intermission, there are some insane fighting sequences. That single shot action scene is incredibly well done, and it helps the movie stay real and authentic rather than stylised or heroic.

The film’s love story premise falls flat; it’s odd to say this about a GVM film, but the love story is the weakest element of the whole thing. Marakuma Nenjam song occasionally comes across as being overused in the movie. The music occasionally begins abruptly and feels a little strange. The time shift in the climax to establish the second half is out of place and ruins the first part’s well-thought-out climax.

As Muthu, STR is incredibly convincing. His nonverbal cues contribute to the film’s eerie worldbuilding. He perfectly captures the unease. His metamorphosis and inspiration are not particularly heroic, which benefits the movie. There is a spiritual undercurrent to the movie. The story of how a gun may turn a man evil is told in Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu. When Muthu first used a gun to kill a man, that scene was the movie’s high point.

Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu is a good effort all around. Even if not everything goes as planned, you will get invested in Muthu’s life. GVM deserves praise for not taking the easiest path.

Brahmastra: Part one-Shiva(2022)Review- Definitely not a passion project

0

Brahmastra is an action fantasy film, which takes its cues from a few ideas from Indian mythology. It is directed by Ayan Mukerji and stars Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt.

The claim is that it is a passion project. the most ambitious Hindi film to be released in recent memory. However, the movie failed to deliver on any of its promises or assertions. Brahmastra worked quite hard to be entertaining. Many sequences feel very forced. Writing is the main issue. Underdeveloped and inconsistent characters, zero detailing and some poorly executed action scenes are the main reason for the failure.

Ranbir Kapoor’s portrayal is so uneven that you couldn’t connect with him even once. The only thing that remains constant is Ranbir’s hairdo. One of the most enigmatic abilities of Ranbir’s persona is that he never needs to comb his hair when he gets up. His hair will naturally assume its ideal appearance. Ranbir doesn’t engage in a lot of hand-to-hand combat. The opening shot of Ranbir’s first fighting scene was so horribly done that you can clearly see Ranbir dangling awkwardly from a wire. These are very low benchmarks for a film with a budget around 400 cr INR.

There is terrible dialogue writing. Ranbir mentions taking the last name of his future wife in one of the sequences. What a forward-thinking conversation, huh? But throughout the movie, Ranbir’s character constantly imposed his own decisions on Alia’s. We can refer to this as  hypocrisy. They made an effort to appear hip and forward-thinking, but it was all external. There is only a vacuum inside.

Except for a few visual effects scenes, a few songs, and Shahrukh Khan’s cameo, there is nothing nice about Brahmastra. All we can see are the seeds. However, the Astraverse concept is immature, so they devised a love narrative to compensate for it, but it actually does more harm than good.

Finally, Brahmastra is a 400 cr mess. Obviously it is a very ambitious project but definitely not a passion project. Maybe they put 10 years of hard work into this project, but as it seems that, they didn’t give a week to develop the script. Maybe they worked on this project for ten years, but it doesn’t appear like they gave the script development a week.

Cuttputlli (2022) Review- Lazy Filmmaking

0

Cuttputlli is a remake of the 2018 Tamil film Ratsasan. However, during the press conference, the creators stressed the word “inspire” above “remake.” We can assure you that the movie is not inspired by anything. The only objective for producing Cuttputlli is to generate some quick money.

Despite having many shortcomings, Ratsasan was a well-made movie. Given the additional resources, we would anticipate a much more polished version from the remake. Here, though, we see the exact opposite. The makers maintain everything that is flawed and remove everything that is perfect. Ratsasan’s final thirty minutes became its talking point at the time of its release. But in Cuttputlli, they ruined the climax in a rush. It’s remain unclear what the antagonist wants or why. They did not allow for the establishment of the antagonist. The film’s entire plot turns into a comedy towards the climax.

Akshay’s entire family aspect feels really phoney. By working as a low rank police officers, they maintain a million-dollar lifestyle. Akshay Kumar fluctuates throughout the movie. He appears utterly uninterested. The work of other actors is simply routine. Crime thrillers do better in a hill station setting because it produces an aesthetically unpleasant atmosphere. However, the makers failed to make the most of the hill station setting. The editing does not allow cinematographer Rajeev Ravi to make this thriller more atmospheric.

Cuttputlli is a terrible waste of money and effort. It neither has a spectacular climax like its original nor any merit on its own. Ranjit M. Tewari would be well to create some original films rather than drawing inspiration from Ratsasan, Baby, and Airlift. This is what we call Lazy Filmmaking.

Liger (2022) Review – In their pursuit of a blockbuster, they create a recipe for disaster

0

Liger is meant to be the ‘pan-Indian‘ movie. Karan Johar from the Hindi film industry and Puri Jagannadh from the Telugu film industry collaborated to produce it. Puri wrote and directed it as well. In the movie, Mike Tyson makes a cameo appearance.

Puri is quite popular among the masses. He is particularly well-known for his template masala entertainers. If we examine his earlier works, we will discover that he is a devout adherent to masala templates. So Liger is no exception, an imperfect but powerful hero, a heroine who exists solely for romance, out-of-place songs, and a plethora of action sequences. However, nothing works here. But what goes wrong with this proven formula?

First and foremost, our hero needs a villain. A masala film without an antagonist is unquestionably a lousy concept. The final-act story surprise featuring Mike Tyson is completely absurd. Because the plot centred around MMA, there was potential for some exciting action. They did, however, wind up with a few montages. The casting of Ananya Pandey is the second issue. Ananya Pandey lacks the exuberance required to play the heroine in masala films. Thirdly, there is a lack of conviction. Puri absolutely missed his mark as a director and even more so as a writer. When the film concludes, it feels unfinished. It’s all sloppy or reckless filmmaking.

The only thing decent about the film is Vijay Deverakonda. Even if some blows are obviously a miss hit and the situations are quite uncomfortable, he manages to persuade you. However, he squandered his talent and time by starring in these outdated masala films. Vijay is the one who changed the pattern by playing Arjun Reddy. Even after that, he continued to favour highly diverse film genres. However, after making such films, returning to this silly masala film seems to be a wrong move for him.

Liger is an ill-conceived masala movie overall. Which even didn’t do justice to the masala genre. Regressive writing, dull characters, unnecessary songs, and poor casting decisions all ensure the movie’s failure. In their pursuit of a blockbuster, they create a recipe for disaster.

Broker (2022) Review – Uphold the human spirit in its purest form

0

Broker is a Korean language film written and directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda staring Song Kang-ho, Gang Dong-won, Bae Doona, Lee Ji-eun and Lee Joo-young. Song Kang-ho won the Best Actor Award at Cannes for his work in Broker.

Thematically, Broker is quite similar to some of Kore-eda‘s earlier works, like Shoplifters and Like Father, Like Son. It calls into question the concept of family in our conservative society. The story begins with a mother abandoning her baby on the doorstep of a church that offers a Babybox service. Individuals can use this service to covertly abandon their infants inside the Babybox. In South Korea as well as other nations across the world, this Babybox idea is quite debatable in terms of both law and ethics. In the film, the mother does not place the infant inside the Babybox, but rather leaves the baby on the floor, but why? Kore-eda never answers the question. It gave the audience room to reflect. Is it possible to become a mother just through childbirth? Can a woman naturally grow her maternal instinct if she has a child? Is the Babybox to blame for the rise in irresponsible mothers? What about the father? Is it entirely the mother’s fault? Why not abort if you’re unable to accept responsibility? In the first five minutes of the movie, a lot of questions are raised. Such bravery on the part of Kore-eda to pose these queries to a judgmental society.

Two investigators are pursuing a child trafficking ring that two members of the church are running. These detectives stand in for you, the audience. Song Kang-ho and a friend abducted the baby from the Babybox and destroyed all CCTV footage. Let me start by saying that this is not a crime thriller. It has a stronger human flavour. Eventually the mother and these two kidnappers team up together and go on a road trip to sell the baby to a worthy couple, while the two detectives also follow them to the end.

This is a story about some misfits/outcasts who get together and form a familial bond. People are normally born into a family, but in this story, our protagonists tries to form a family. It could be unusual, yet it seems extremely natural. Somehow, the time they spend together has an impact on their thinking. They are at odds with themselves but still being kind to each other. They enjoy some good times together. The film’s attempt is to highlight the contrasting character of humans and their relationships. Even the traditional family structure in our society is called into question.

Kore-eda attempts to artistically depict the contradictory human nature. The use of light and shadows during a conversation in a train journey to depict the contrasts within the individual is an amazing cinematic moment. There are times in the movie when you can’t understand the characters’ motivations since they don’t abide by social norms or even the imposed values of society. The acting in the movie is excellent. They provide credence to the movie’s realism. With all the mayhem around, it is the performances, particularly those of Song Kang-ho, Gang Dong-won, and Lee Ji-eun, that add lightness to the film without sacrificing its profundity.

Broker is a well-made film that discusses the complexities of challenges encountered by outcasts, and attempts to uphold the human spirit in its purest form. One of finest film from the master filmmaker Kore-eda. The film never serves to the anticipation of the audience intentionally. As one of the detectives in the film stated, “WE are the real brokers.” Of course we are.

Thank you for being born.

Decision to Leave (2022) Review- Artfully Constructed

0

Decision to Leave is a Korean romantic-mystery film co-written and directed by Park Chan-wook. Previously, he directed some excellent films, including The Handmaiden and Oldboy.

Confucius said, “The wise love the water, the benevolent the mountains.” These lines from Decision to Leave establish the film’s philosophy. The relationship between a widow, who is suspected for her husband’s killing, and a detective is at the core of the film’s plot. They have a really peculiar, enigmatic and yet extremely natural relationship. Nature defies all logic and is ungoverned. Nature only functions in harmony. So their relationship, like nature, defies logic, but there is a harmony about it. Rhythm is really crucial in the story, which is why Park Chan-wook communicates through several match cuts and transitions. Even the music and certain voice-overs are cleverly combined to match the film’s pulse.

As a mysterious woman with some strange motivations, Tang Wei as Seo-rae ( the widow) excels in her performance. Her role serves as the film’s catalyst. Park Hae-il does a great job portraying a detective who is obsessed with unsolved cases. When the two opposing egos clash, we experience calm and harmony rather than mayhem. Though there is some anticipation and tension to it. The melancholy finale will have a lasting impression on you. Mist is also another force of nature that is prominently featured in the film, along with mountains and seas.

“The moment you said you loved me, your love is over. The moment your love ends, my love begins.” You’ll somehow remember these lines and become perplexed. You’re looking for any explanation or justification for this peculiar love story. Your mind attempts to solve the puzzle but fails. However, Confucius said, “I seek not to know the answers,  but to understand questions” thus you are not needed to.

Decision to Leave has a lot of metaphors and is quite mysterious. A basic background of Chinese philosophy can help you understand the theme better. Nonetheless, the story of human relationships in it will undoubtedly resonate with you in a variety of ways. It is an artfully constructed film that uses metaphors of Chinese philosophy to illustrate human nature and its unpredictable character.

Vikrant Rona (2022) Review – Unapologetically cheats on you

0

Vikrant Rona is a fantasy adventure film written and directed by Anup Bhandari. It is a Kannada-language film that has been dubbed into Hindi and other languages.

Recently, a lot of 3D movies have been released, however most of them don’t fully utilise the format. Since then the 3D format has only served to drive up ticket costs. Vikrant Rona, on the other hand, has been conceived taking the 3D format seriously. Each shot is planned keeping in mind the 3D effect, which gives the viewers an immersive movie watching experience. The combined effort of the art team, VFX team and DoP is evident in every frame. They succeeded in creating a universe that is mysterious. After KGF, the Kannada film industry is undeniably pursuing technological excellence in light of its modest budget.

While we acknowledge the technological achievement, we must admit that Vikarnt Rona falls short in terms of plot and character development. The film is full of gimmicks that hit you right in the face. For the sake of suspense, they simply end up writing a confusing screenplay in which each character frequently fails to convince the audience of their motivations and frequently alters it for the writer’s convenience. In retrospect, all of the subplots appear to have loose ends or to be unnecessary.

Even though his character journey is questionable, Kiccha Sudeep comes off as convincing. Other actors’ performances are inconsistent throughout the film. The movie offers itself a chance to redeem itself for it in the final fifteen minutes. perhaps not enough.

Overall, Vikrant Rona unapologetically cheats on you, yet nevertheless possesses some redeemable qualities. It tries to ride on your anticipation while challenging your intelligence.

Shamshera (2022) Review – The Ultimate Disaster

Karan Malhotra, who previously directed Agneepath and Brothers (both remakes), failed badly in his attempt to helm this original film Shamshera. Not precisely the original, but not a copycat either. It mixes KGF with Bahubali.

This movie caused me such a bad headache that I had to leave at the intermission. I have never before been unable to muster the confidence to finish a movie. Ranbir Kapoor failed for the first time as an actor; it seemed unusual that he attempted to emulate Salman Khan and failed miserably. Sanjay Dutt is entirely about style without substance. The movie offers little for analysis.

After Yash Chopra’s passing, YRF releases all the subpar movies. Some movies, like Tiger Zinda Hai or War, do well at the box office, but it doesn’t make up for the films’ lacklustre quality. If YRF believes that spectators will flock to the theatre to watch Vaani Kapoor’s full item song, then they are only daydreaming. Shamshera is the ultimate disaster and those in Bollywood only know how to  make disasters successfully.

Gangs of Puri (2022) Review- Has the potential to be a game changer

0

The Odia industry is currently in the midst of a major crisis. At the moment, no one is interested in seeing Odia films in theatres. There are several reasons for this, but we won’t go into them today. On the other hand, the emergence of OTT platforms in recent years provides some optimism. Even OTT platforms are overloaded with lousy content. When we think about the future, it appears to be dismal.

Against all the odds, some enthusiastic young people come together with a web series called Gangs of Puri. The series’ greatest strength is its originality, which is uncommon in Odisha. The writing never leaves Puri’s roots. Objectively, they do a fantastic job at capturing the essence of the locality. The ensemble cast in Gangs of Puri is strong. Every actor justifies his or her role. KK delivers a memorable performance. The reason could be that his character has a clarity that none of the other characters have. The jugalbandi between Gedanna and Nasty adds colour to the story and provides comedic relief with their humorous dialogue in contrast to the series’ serious tone. Aman performed admirably. His transformation from a common man to a gangster is really convincing.

Other technical components such as editing, sound design, and soundtrack are also excellent. They nicely encapsulate the late 1990s or early 2000s time. There are several scenes with dubious visual effects, although they are quite rare. Another unimpressive element is the action. We should expect greater action sequences given that the story is about gangsters. However, the creators are reluctant to show it. Perhaps budget constraints will push them to take that strategy. Deepak Kumar, the cinematographer, has done a terrific job. There are numerous night scenes with well-balanced lighting that appear to be quite natural.

Overall, Gangs of Puri seems interesting and has the potential to be a game changer. Anupam Pattnaik and Jagdish Mishra, the director duo, succeed in establishing an universe of gangsters that keeps viewers engaged throughout the seven-episode web series. Gangs of Puri is a cut above the other odia films and series in every way, from writing to execution. The structure would not last long if it did not have a solid foundation. So, we must commend the writers for crafting such raw characters. Pranab Rath, Amit Dash and Jagdish Mishra all contributed to the script.

Finally, we’d like to point out that, while the language and slang used in the series are authentically from Puri, still the excessive use of slang could have been avoided. It also limits the series’ appeal to a broader audience.

Gangs of Puri is streaming at Kanccha Lanka.
