Bunty aur Babli 2 is a spiritual sequel to 2005 movie Bunty aur Babli. Abhishek Bachchan is replaced by Saif Ali Khan for the sequel, while Rani Mukherjee continues her character. Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukherjee come together for a YRF movie after so many years. As we remember their last outing was Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic released in 2008. It is also nice to see talented new faces like Siddhant Chaturvedi and Sharvari Wagh to share screen space with Saif and Rani.
Con artists Bunty and Babli are retired and living a very simple life. Story starts when new con artists started to scam people using the name of Bunty aur Babli. Inspector Jatayu Singh, played by Pankaj Tripathy, seeks help from the original Bunty Babli to catch the new Bunty Babli.
It is purely a comedy film with all the bollywood masala in it. The performances are upto the point. There are many hilarious moments. The child actor playing the character of Saif and Rani’s son is most hilarious. There is no doubt in Rani Mukherjee’s performance but Saif Ali Khan, who replaced Abhishek, also gives a convincing performance.
It talks about two different generations of con artists, the new Bunty Babli are very well aware of new technologies while the old ones have their old techniques. Bunty aur Babli 2 is all about who cons who in the end. Obviously their face-off is going to unfold a laugh riot.
The story is very simple and straightforward. Shakar-Ehsaan-Loy has done good work on music. When the Hindi film industry has gone through the crisis of lack of original songs. It is good to see an original album. Given the fact that it is a sequel, the makers could have gone for the remake of songs from the first film, which were even chartbusters at that time. But thank god they didn’t do that. The lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya are very fresh and set the tone for the story. From line like ‘ dekho magar 16 sawan bad bhi, thede ke ye thedhe hi kirdar hai‘ to ‘love ju dil sarson ka khet hai zammidar tu‘ lyrics are very well integrated into the story.
Somehow the plot is not fully convincing. Though it’s a comedy movie , to make a sequel after 16 years with this plotline is not fully justified. The treatment seems outdated and very predictable but works well in the movie. There are two types of reception this movie is going to get : one is, the movie is outdated and the second one is, finally a better masala film from the Industry. We go with the second one.
Bunty aur Babli 2 is a stress buster fun film without any forced social messaging. The debutante director Varun V. Sharma did a perfect job. The new Bunty Babli Siddhant and Sharvari gave an honest performance. We hope they will get much love from today’s generation. Lastly we missed Abhishek Bachchan.
